As the manager of Mega Bloks’ social media, I spend a lot of my day chatting with and listening to fans. Questions, requests, and future set ideas abound among the Halo community. And I’ve seen countless lists of dream vehicles – vehicles from the Halo universe that fans want to see in Mega Bloks form. There is one mainstay on those lists – the UNSC Mammoth.
Playing the game myself, and then spending the days talking with super-fans of the Halo universe, I know how much of a dream vehicle the UNSC Mammoth is. I still remember my excitement at getting to finally officially confirm to the community that yes, it will be released as our fall 2013 Signature Series set.
In-game, the M510 Mammoth is one of the most powerful ground assets ever designed. At roughly 70 meters in length and carrying numerous mounted support weapons and materiel caches, the mammoth’s most significant attribute is its topside MAC, designed to target and eliminate hostile vessels in terrestrial or even suborbital positions.
It was incredible to work in such close proximity to the team that designed this war machine. I’d occasionally get glimpses of the Mammoth evolving through the various design stages from concept drawings to prototype models to the final build. I think fans will love the final design of such an epic vehicle.
If we had translated the Mammoth in the same vehicle:human scale as in the games, the finished set would be over four feet long. While that would be an incredible build experience, we created a set that is epic in size but still reasonable for fans to play with and display. The buildable vehicle is about half a meter long and 22 cm high. At over 2000 pieces, it is the second largest build Mega has ever done and is a fitting addition to the Signature Series collection.
Putting together a set with over 2,000 pieces is a challenging proposition. Ask anyone who has assembled the Forward Unto Dawn. But it’s an extremely rewarding one once the final vehicle starts coming together. You can see the command centre coming together, note the details as you build the walls of the hangar, create the beast of a MAC entirely out of blocks. This set comes with a huge collection of blocks in a rusted desrt camo effect plus unique parts – both will be awesome additions to customizers’ workshops.
The Mammoth has full interior and exterior play potential. On the exterior is the previously mentioned MAC, which rotates 360 degrees and tilts up and down. A pair of rotating missile launchers can each hold a Spartan in place. In addition, it features catwalks, access ramps and dozens of other potential play spots for your figures.
Of course it’s so much more than just a shell. The interior of the vehicle is fully accessible and just as detailed as the exterior. Remove the front section of the roof to access a detailed command center behind the green-glassed windshield.
Remove the rear section of roof and reveal a full hangar deck. The back ramp lowers to load and transport small vehicles like a Mongoose or fully loaded Night Ops Gausshog and the side access ramps allow for infantry troop deployment.
Included in this set are two brand new official characters. We are proud to finally bring Commander Lasky to the collection and give a light-up AI Roland a home on board the Mammoth. They’re joined by three all-new figures – a marine plus two Spartans in gunmetal armour and fiery red visors.
A set that was requested by many is hitting shelves at Toys R Us in North America right now! I’m looking forward to seeing the very first reviews of the UNSC Mammoth. It’s an epic set and you guys are going to have an awesome time putting it together.
Let us know what you think once you pick one up!
